Yes, this is not possible yet, since grass doesn't provide libgrass
which is necessary to link gdal against grass. It seems that Frank
plans to add a grass driver to gdal . I think the best is to wait
for this driver before grass support is included in the official

Since I am the gdal debian maintainer and have been asked to add
grass support to gdal (Hi Paolo ;-)), I investigated the situation
within the last days and I found unofficial debian packages for
qgis, gdal and grass5.7 on .
There has been a discussion on how to install them on .
They have been build for unstable but if you download the sources it
should be rather easy to recompile them on sarge. Here an example
# unpack sources:
dpkg-source -x gdal_1.2.0-2.dsc
# evtl. edit debian/rules (this is just a makefile to build the
# package) or debian/control (among other things this file describes
# the dependencies and builddeps to other packages)
# rebuild package
fakeroot debian/rules binary
# install package
dpkg -i libgdal1_1.2.0-3.deb
