Hi FreeGIS team,
finally after a long and hard time of work, the
third generation of the FreeGIS portal is available
as an alpha version for testing by the core team.
http://new.freegis.org
This version is not connected to the current database!
Rather is uses a copy from August 2004. Many test-changes
have been applied that are not true in reality.
The third generation could be seen as the FreeGIS 5th
anniversary edition :-)
The hottest new features are:
- Management of the database is opened to third parties
my means of a contributor/manager concept.
Contributors can submit new entries/changes in a
form so that maintainer simply can click Accept if
OK.
The fame goes to the contributors then.
- Full I18N support.
Now for all entries and for the whole web site
an arbitray number of translations can be supported.
Provided, trustworthy people stand up and say they will
do it.
- updated web design
There any many many other small improvements.
Many thanks go to Rainer Höckmann who actually did
most of the work to redesign the database and the portal
itself!
Now, whats to be done:
- Please give feedback on the new site.
(I already identified some problems to fix/improve)
- A major question: there are two homepage alternatives.
Do you think, Homepage2 is better than the old one?
- Those who like to test the contributor/maintainer feature,
let me know in private mail your OpenPGP key and I will
send you test-accounts.
All the best
Jan
