Hi Pete,

the recommended world-DEM covering Europe is GLOBE DEM 30''.
You can access it from
www.freegis.org

It offers ~ 1km resolution (raster cell length).

For watersheds etc. you can use GRASS GIS even linked on FreeGIS
page.

I am not aware of any higher resolution DEMs which are
public *accessible*... The data situation in U.S.A. is much better
than in Europe where most data access is restricted :-((
