[Freegis-list] Dynamic Segmentation-Shape files (Sorry Off Topic)

Hi all,
         We are using arcview-ims for our project.What I would like to know
is,is that possible to segment a shape file(.shp,.dbf,.shx) into line
events.I was not able to link my event table(.txt file) with the shape file
thru arcview.Can somebody explain me if DS is possible only for arcinfo
coverages or we can dynamically segement data even from shape files
?,...with a bit of explanation.
