[Freegis-list] Shapefile Spatial Indexes

Greetings:

Does anyone have code for generating spatial indexes on shapefiles in a format consistent with that used by the various ESRI desktop products?  We would like to build the indexes in UNIX within automated processes and it appears that ESRI only provides NT-based tools for accomplishing this.
