It is quite important which type of data you ar looking for
(which resolution, features). The situation about free geo-data
is bad in general, but for the US more comfortable than for the
rest of the world.
Many public or university libraries in the US offer hundreds
of CDs with geo-data to copy.

The FreeGIS project has concentrated on software far more
than on data by now. I added the need to refine the data
situation and availability to the todo list.
