Hi Andreas,
I can definitely recommend GDAL to you. It's been an very pleasant
experience porting the VTP software onto GDAL.
Of course, you could also just use the VTP's vtElevationGrid class (vtdata
library). It encapsulates GDAL, adds some other formats as well, including
native USGS DEM which GDAL omits, and is even easier to use.
