Funny thing, so did mine. :-( 

But ... I was working at about three things at once and confused what I
really wanted to do and what I stated.  The actual problem is how to
maintain a relation between the old coordinates' other data and the new
coordinates.
   Sorry for the confusion and useless bandwidth consumption.

I've loaded the data into a PostGIS table in lat/long. (It came as a shp
file - thank goodness for shp2pgsql.)  I'll pull it, probably using
perl, parse the coordinates out, call proj, re-assemble the data and
insert it back into the PostGIS table.
   This is unless someone knows of a stand-alone shp file projection
converter.
