AFAIK mrsid is a proprietory format which might not be easy to
handle, because I expect patent problems. The wavelet compression is
a nice technique though. Even with JPEG2000 we can expect some
proprietory parts of the format (I remember an article in c't or iX
about this).
So we need people like the PNG guys to create a good format which
can be used by everyone.
