the use of these is quite restricted.

Ironically the fact that nowadays (due to reduced governmental
education expenses) universities are forced to have commercial
interests in most of their projects.

I suspect that the numbers of *real* non-commercial users
of such data is very limited.
Most users probably can be sued.


There is another world-wide dataset offering
good quality coastlines, GSHHS:
