[Freegis-list] arcview

I use Autodesk Map 5 to create a topology, create
closed polylines, then export to shapefile.  Any
polygons which are complete islands within another
polygon get counted twice for area.  I can manually
fix this by using the clip command in edit mode from
within arcview.  Does the e00 or a coverage format
deal with these "donut holes" better?  Or is there a
way to have arcview go through and clip all the island
polygons from the outer polygon?  Thanks for any help.
