if I understand it correctly, you implemented a shapefile
reader yourself.

There are already various shapefile libraries available
as Free Software. The most famous one is shapelib
by Frank Wamerdam, but there are solutions in Java as well.

If you don't want to use one of those implementations,
you could at least use them to learn how they avoid/solve
the problems you faced.
