A distribution.

That's quite difficult to answer since your question is very broad in
scope. Try your next bookstore for books on getting started with Linux -
there should be plenty.

For Debian it is quite easy
	apt-get install grass

and ready you are.
For using GRASS you have to consult the GRASS documentation.
