[Freegis-list] free gis for counting trees

Hi all,

I need to do some tests using high resolution aero-infrared photographies to count the number of trees for a given eucalyptus forest area.

The hard thing is how to count trees when they are not so young? I mean, there are some case where 2 or 3 trees sounds like 1 only tree for various classification algorithms...

Can anybody recommend me a free gis that could do that?
