I have built a LiveCD with over 1Gb of shapefiles & geotiffs as data, & using
QGIS as the GIS viewing tool.
As a Live CD it doesn't run under Windows, but you boot the PC off the CD
itself, so it is totally self contained. GIS-Knoppix & the AIT STAR CD are two
other good examples.
I used PCLinuxOS as the enabling Linux distro, steps are:
boot off the PCLinuxOS LiveCD
click the "install to hard drive" icon & install wit a 2Gb root partition & 2Gb
swap
