If you're looking for simple, GRASS isn't what you're looking for.  It's
easily 10x more complicated than the VTP. :)

Perhaps i could assist you to produce a stripped-down VTP-based viewer which
has only the functionality you need?  That would depend greatly on your
exact needs.
