You might try the wms-dev list as well. I think there are services that 
have portions of the world at higher resolution.

The good news is that Paul Ramsey is going to be talking about this at 
the OGC meeting next week. The hope is that a group will form to work 
out how to do a good job of having a comprehensive catalog.
