Sounds like Grass should be able to do the job:
- import GPS points into points vector layer: v.in.garmin (if using
Garmin) / other v.in.* module (depending on how your GPS points are
stored)
- convert into raster grid layer storing the number of points in given
vicinity as each cell value: v.neighbors
- visualize the raster: nviz
