Also note that much data is "available" via Web Services such as WMS,

http://www.skylab-mobilesystems.com/en/wms_serverlist.html

Also, it can be easy to download satellite imagery & georeference these for use
with a GIS, or download already georeferenced imagery, eg:

http://telascience.sdsc.edu/tela_data/onearth/
