openDWG libraries for now until such a time as
a) OpenDWG make the code free. From what I've heard I don't think this
is likely.
a) We have enough developers to write our own DWG code. This isn't
likely either.
b) The project has enough different uses to be able to run usefully
without the DWG code. (maybe possible but not ideal)
c) We ditch the DWG code altogether and use the DXF code from another
GPL program. In which case the program is now a dxf viewer than can save
to png or bmp. (not very useful)
d) like you said, we club together with some other projects and write
the dwg code. I can think of much larger projects such as qcad which
don't have DWG support, but they don't have it listed on their "wish
list" either. This will take a mountain of work and a long time.
Best idea is maybe a mix of c) and d)? In the short term replace the
OpenDWG dxf code with GPL dxf code while talking with other projects and
then working on a seperate project that creates free DWG libraries. This
will take a long time and a number of developers.
phew, I thought it was just going to be a simple software version
announcement too.... :-)
