MapIt! handles only raster maps and is implemented in Python.
UMN MapServer handles raster, Shapefiles and some Database
sources and is implemented in C.
The user community of UMN MapServer is indeed much larger than
of MapIt!.
The advantage of MapIt! is that it is small and tries to solve
only one task: show points of interest on raster maps.
Thus a tool well fitting for small city-guide maps (where are the
hotels?).
Anything more complex should be approached with the UMN MapServer.
