--xcols is hard coded to be used like:
statist  --xcols  config_file  fixed_width_data_file  dest_file

and not like:
statist [options] --xcols  config_file  fixed_width_data_file  dest_file

Although this sequence of commands is documented in the
--help message, in the man page, and in the user manual,
something more flexible would be better. Currently, the
parameters passed to the program must be exactly the 4 above
and in the same sequence. I can add this problem to
KNOWN_BUGS and try to make it more flexible for the next
release.

Do you mean something like the following?:
