Improved PostGIS-Interface

Hi Jens,

thank you very much for your work on the postgis interface. I discussed 
your post briefly with Bernhard (H.), but we haven't had the time to
look into it deeply. One thought:

Did you contact the psycopg people to elaborate this? Maybe a bug in in
there?

However, in your test setting even a speed up by four times seems to be 
a very big step forward :)
