uncompressing the attachment will create a new directory Extensions/gdal
and add thuban.py.patch to the current directory. apply the path and
then run thuban. there will be a new menu option under map to add a gdal
image layer. the behavior should be the same as for a raster layer.
one additional enhancement i have added is incremental rendering. the
layer is rendered in four quandrants. while this is slightly slower than
generating the whole image at once, the visual feedback is more pleasing
as one sees the image appear in stages, rather than a white screen with
no sense of anything happening until the image appears.
the number of rows and columns that make up the incremental rendering is
adjustable. they are currently set at 2, but can be changed using the
xblocks and yblocks variables in gdallayer.py. if they are both set to 1
the whole image is generated in one step, as per the current behavior
for raster layers.
