Hi Bram,
The good way to handle this is to use the user's locale... For example,
i'm using fr_BE at UTF-8 locales but some systems here are still
fr_BE at ISO-8859-1 .
Considering Thuban, it has an internal encoding that should be full
utf-8 (Bernhard, correct me if i'm wrong) Looking at
thuban/Doc/technotes/string_representation.txt and
thuban/Thuban/__init__.py, it's not already the case.
