pyshapelib: python requirements

Hi,

I've tried to build pyshapelib on linux today (as I have access to it
again), and it broke on PyOS_ascii_atof as it is new in Python 2.4 and
the linux box is still running 2.3.5.

What do we do?  Bump up the requirements or compile conditionally? 

What do we know about the atof situation prior to Python 2.4?
