You have probably tried that on a command line.
Probably as root?

Try it as user when X11 is started.

Background: 
The system needs the variable DISPLAY to be set
so it can open its windows.
Usually when you open a terminal application from within X11,
echo $DISPLAY 
will show you that everything is alright.
Changing the user to "root" will reset that variable.
