[Freegis-list] Free map data for Europe especially Germany

Hi All,

In order to test the scope of services of free GIS Software I would like to
use
free available data for Europe particularly for Germany. Preferred data
formats
are ESRI's Shapefiles and MIF files or files that can be converted to *.shp
or 
*.mif.Does anybody know resources where I can get this data. I searched a
lot
of sites but haven't found anything.
