I am glad to see that you give free GIS software a chance :-)

With free geo-data for Europe/Germany you have identified a
serious problem, because such data are just not available
if you are looking at resolutions better than about 1:1.000.000.
There are some data coming from the US which contain major
characteristics of Europe's geography at about 1:1Mio.
I suggest to have a look at VMAP Level 0 and the GMT data.
