Alexander,
I think you will find that your existing choice of environment will
determine alot about what embeddable choices you have. By environment, I
mean platform (win32, unix/x), gui toolkit (Qt, Gtk, WxWindows, Win32)
and language (Java, C, C++, Python, etc).
Also, I am not sure what GIS capabilities you want. Certainly there are a
number of candidates with support for displaying raster and vector data. If
you want full GIS analysis capabilities your list of candidates will be much
more restricted.
A few possible candidates (by no means comprehensive):
o GeoTools: Java, raster/vector
o FMaps: C/C++, vector, X/GTK
o OpenEV: C/C++/Python, GTK, OpenGL, raster/vector
o OpenMap: Java, raster/vector
o OSSIM: C++, WxWindows (win32/Unix-X), raster
Note that many Open Source applications can be adapted to be embedded in
other applications by their malliable nature.
