thanks for the info.

Yes, MapObjects and GeoObjects are not free, but I was hoping someone
from the list has some experience with those or alike ;-)

Frank give me the tip of Thuban some time ago, and I have been
following, but as you said, editing attributes will possibly be
implemented at a later stage. 

In general an application like Thuban is was I'm looking for. Easy to
understand and to work with. Only thing from my wishlist missing is the
editing attributes ;-)

Both products are proprietary software.
As this list is about Free Software (as in "freedom of speech")
you cannot expect us to know software denying us the needed freedom
to use, adapt, modify and redistribute it. :)

Well you can run this on one machine easily somewhat would assume.

I expect that OpenMap can easily be adapted to be a simple
shapefile editor.

We expect that Thuban (currently in early 0.1.2 release)
will be extented one day to do what you want.
It already has an attribute viewing window using a powerful
table widget.
