right? I just tried and it also failed for me.

According to 
http://www.remotesensing.org/gdal/frmt_various.html#USGSDEM
it should be supported. You may post that to the GDAL mailing
list or file a bug/wish at the GDAL site.

But meanwhile you can try (example: adams.dem)
 m.dem.examine adams.dem
 -> file contents
 
 m.dem.extract adams.dem
 -> import (not shure if this command is still functional)
