[Freegis-list] vmap0 and ogr2ogr

dear list

i have problem converting the VMAP0/Eurnasia dataset into shapefiles
using the ogr2ogr utility program.

i know that a problem with identical symptoms already has been solved on
this mailing list (see
http://www.intevation.de/pipermail/freegis-list/2003-June/001411.html )
but the "tricks" mentioned there seem not to work in my case.

the ogr utility programs (ogrinfo / ogr2ogr) i use came with the
FWTools-linux-0.9.6 package and include OGDI support.

ogr2ogr works without complaining, but the resulting shapefiles are
almost empty.

ogrinfo tells me that all layers except 4 contain 0 features.
the 4 that contain features are:

feature count: 1424 - libref at libref(*)_line
feature count: 28   - tileref at tileref(*)_area
feature count: 107  - libreft at libref(*)_text
feature count: 28   - tilereft at tileref(*)_text

I tried with removing all trailing dots of the vpf files and i do not
access the dataset via nfs, but nothing worked so far.

i use commands like this:

ogr2ogr polbnda.shp gltp:/vrf/absolute/path/to/v0eur/vmaplv0/eurnasia \
'polbnda at bnd(*)_area'

and always get the same unsatisfying results without any errors or
warnings.
