I tried exactly same (only replacing /absolute/path/to/v0eur/ by /cdrom/ ;-)
and it works great.  I used an ogr2ogr version 1.2.1 compiled with
ogdi-support.

What happens if you type
ogrinfo gltp:/vrf/absolute/path/to/v0eur/vmaplv0/eurnasia  'polbnda at bnd(*)_area'

It should give some general information about the layer and
afterwards some information about each feature.

If this doesn't give a clou you should perhaps ask on gdal-dev again
since there are normally more people who are competent with the
usage of ogr.
