Actually the core idea of MapIt! is to have a light-weight
web mapping server serving rastermaps, no vector maps.
As for the background maps there will be no direct support of
vector data. Perhaps there will be some support for objects of
interest as lines or polygons ...

yes. If you have vector maps and a rendering tool, you can
always create rastemaps for use with MapIt!.
We have done so recently with the GMT data (will go online
probably next week).
However, if your application will make much use of the
fact that data are in vector format (e.g. interactive change of
street colors, ...) you might want to have a look on the MapServer
http://mapserver.gis.umn.edu/index.html
There are some further vector-based web mapping applications listed
at http://freegis.org/
There you will also find tools to render raster maps from vector data.
