[Mapit] plotting routes

Hello 

This is my first email & I am new to GIS programming
so please excuse my naive questions!!

with regards to Mapit
1- How do I scan new maps (street maps) ? 
2- How do I plot street routes on a map using series
of Lons/Lats.

Finally how does Mapit compare to MapServer
