Did you compile Thuban yourself?

Yes, through RPM spec file.

When loading a SHAPE file (which runs fine in GRASS 6 or
QGIS):

 Segmentation fault

example:
 Loading freegis_worlddata-0.2_simple/geodata/countries_simpl.shp
 Segmentation fault

example GeoTIFF:
 Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/lib/thuban/Thuban/UI/baserenderer.py", line 479, in  draw_raster_layer
    (width, height))
 IOError: Attempt to create BMP dataset with an illegal
 data type (Int16), only Byte supported by the format.
