this is the only major difference between our systems (as far as this
list goes). i wonder if the underlying implementations have a bug in how
they create the image from the bits, or how they create the mask.

unfortunately, i can't use gtk 2.4 because the debian version of
wxwindows is only built against gtk 1.2.
