I think Jan already had thought about this for a while.
One choice to decide is which format to use for the symbols
or only to use some more symbols which are coded in python.

So far my idea was to use a rather simple format and not something
complicated as the Thuban-MAP-SVG output option allows to use
a full blown vector drawing or layout application to do a final map.

E.g. you can use Skencil to add really nice symbols and we should
not replicate Skencils advances features within Thuban.
