So what?  Making this faster is more important at the moment and we
should be getting plenty of independence from using GDAL in the first
place.  At least I hope so.  I never had much time to look at Thuban's
raster code, unfortunately.

I sure hope there is.  Trying to get rid of the intermediate BMP file is
a good start.
