What is the speed/memory tradeoff? Right now, GDALwarp is being asked
to reproject the raster such that only the visible portion is
rendered. If we were instead to tell it to render the entire raster
into memory, we could tell wxWindows to draw only the visible
portion. That would make panning a LOT faster. Trouble is that it
would also increase the memory requirements such that the entire
uncompressed raster map must be held in memory.

How big are the rasters that thuban users use?
How important is fast panning to them?
