ok, i just checked in my changes. let me know what you think.
in the properties dialog for a raster layer, there is a check box "Use
Mask". if that is selected, then gdal will generate an alpha mask that
is used to mask off the non-real portions of the projected image. by
default, it is off because it requires more memory and using a mask
could take a little longer to draw.
