if the flag is false, the flag is not saved.
here are some reasons i can think of not to use a mask:
1) using a mask uses more memory
2) there is only one raster image and it is on the bottom
3) rendering is faster (for large images this would be important)
i'm sure there are others, so the user should have the option.
