We could keep it in CVS for now 
to see if other implementations will help
and if people actually need it.

This is CVS HEAD, I do not think we decided on a gdal version yet.
I go along with saying that support for other gdal versions is good
to keep if the cost for keeping it are low enough.

However I think that Nina's stuff will most likely require a recent gdal.
Whe people start to want this, then depending on gdal-1.2.5 is not a
problem.
