gdal rpms für fedora?

Both good reasons, but building an rpm for gdal should not be too difficult.

Nice, there are also rpms at
	http://mappinghacks.com/rpm/
that you could try. I looked into recompiling them for Mandrake,
but found that they had too many build requirements for my purpose.

Yes, this should be part of gdal.
Maybe your systems lacks some development headers (like for python)
which would explain why they weren't build.
