darn. i just downloaded older versions of gdal and it appears that alpha
support wasn't added until 1.2.4. 1.2.5 is the latest and can be
downloaded here: http://gdal.org/dl/  it builds very easily.

1.2.5 is the latest version in the testing and unstable branches of
debian so i didn't notice.
